The construction of the complex palace that we see today was built by Raja Man Singh in the 16th century, while renovations were carried out by Sawai Jai Singh in the 18th century.

It took 6 years to complete the construction of this unique historic monument. This observatory was built between 1727 and 1733. The name is derived from Sanskrit words Yantra Mantra which means instruments and formulae in English. The king had built the Jantar Mantar Jaipur to understand the exact mechanics of the Cosmos. The instruments were built after keeping in mind the positions of the sun, planets, longitudes, latitudes and the equator. It was damaged in the 19th century and was restoration was undertaken in the year 1901 by an amateur astronomer Major Arthur Garrett. However, in 1948 it was announced a national monument.

6. Fort Jaigarh

Jaigarh fort was built to strengthen the security of Amer, its construction commenced in the fifteenth century and continued till the eighteenth century. Designed by a talented architect called Vidhyadhar, the fort is named after Jai Singh who built it in 1726. Jaigarh fort was at the center of artillery production during the erstwhile era and hence has a massive cannon by the name of Jaivan. These underground water tanks that ensured ample supply of water during wars. It is believed that there is a huge treasure that was buried under the fort that is now seized by the government of Rajasthan when it was discovered in the 1970s.

7. Jal Mahal

Built in the 18th century by Maharaja Madho Singh I, this pleasure palace was first built as a rest house for the king and his people when they returned from the royal duck shooting parties. It is the hot bird watching spot being the home of various local as well as migratory birds. Madho Singh II greatly enhanced much of the exterior of the Jal Mahal Palace and the interior of the palace adding the courtyard grounds.

King Jai Singh II began construction of the Nahargarh Fort in the year 1734. The fort was expanded in the subsequent year and played a significant role in battles that would take place in the region. Though the fort was intended to provide safety to the Mughal, in later years it would serve as a hiding place for Europeans, as Indians rose up against the colonial Raj. It was named after a Mughal Prince whose spirit is said to haunt it.

It is said that when the construction of the fort started, the workers were bewildered to find all their previous day work destroyed every morning. A bit of finding revealed that the hill was haunted by the soul of a prince named Nahar and that he did not take nicely the intrusion of others in his abode. Raja Jai Singh, to placate the irate prince built a small fort to provide his soul a resting place. A shrine was also built and dedicated to the prince. Last but not least, the fort was named after this prince.

9. Birla Temple

Also referred to as Laxmi-Narayan Temple, Birla Mandir Jaipur is a modern one built completely by white marbles to enhance the beauty of Jaipur. It was commissioned and built by the Indian industrialist family, B.M Birla Foundation in 1988. The King of Jaipur donated this land to Birla Family at the cost of mere one rupee for building this temple.

10. Sisodia Rani Garden

This is one beautiful lush green garden originally built for the wife of Sawai, Jai Singh. His wife’s name was Sisodia, from Udaipur. The garden has a Mughal touch. Sisodia Rani garden was said to be created to melt the homesickness of the queen, but others think that it was done for the queen to be able to escape the court intrigues that was against her.

11. Gaitore

It is the place where cenotaphs were erected in memory of the rulers of Jaipur. The designing of Gaitore ki Chhatriyan was done by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. In 1733, after Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II shifted his capital to Jaipur, all the cremations of the Kachhwaha King were done here, except for Maharaja Sawai Ishwari Singh.
