History

Built in the 18th century by Maharaja Madho Singh I, Jal Mahal was first built as a rest house for the king and his people when they returned from the royal duck shooting parties. It is the hot bird watching spot being the home of various local as well as migratory birds. Madho Singh II greatly enhanced much of the exterior of the Jal Palace and the interior of the palace adding the courtyard grounds.

This amazing palace is located in the center of splendid Man-Sarovar lake and it represents the prosperous Rajputana style of architecture. Jal Mahal is one of the best places to visit in jaipur. Built with red sandstone, this Water Palace is a quixotic place. There are intricately carved arches of the ceiling and the extensively done up corridors that gives an alluring look to the Jal Mahal Palace. It is a five-storied building, with its first four floors submerged under the lake. Only the top floor is visible above the lake. The specially designed lime mortar and solid stone walls hold back millions of liters of water and have prevented water seepage for over 250 years.

The most serene palace, Jal Mahal is located on the main Amer-Jaipur road. The water palace is amidst the picturesque surroundings of Mansagar Lake and Nahargarh hills.

Visiting hours

You cannot go inside and the only glimpse you can get is from the road or on the way to Amber Fort, once in the morning and once in the evening when the palace is lit up.

It is around 5 KM from the center of the city. It is easily accessible by autos and taxis.

Best time to visit
