Starting in April, seven areas in Jaipur will benefit from round-the-clock water supply, according to the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED). This initiative aims to ensure continuous water availability even during the peak summer months.
Manish Beniwal, Chief Engineer (Urban and NWR), announced that after the successful implementation in Bajaj Nagar and Bani Park, the PHED will extend the 24×7 water supply scheme to seven more localities. “There is sufficient water in Bisalpur Dam, and the peak summer season will not be a limitation. During the pilot project in Bani Park and Bajaj Nagar, the percentage of non-revenue water decreased from 33% to 21%, significantly reducing wastage. Expanding the areas with round-the-clock services will further improve this percentage,” Beniwal stated.
The state government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the City of Aarhus in Denmark on May 19 last year to develop infrastructure for the 24×7 water supply scheme. The PHED has since replaced outdated supply lines in the designated areas, reducing non-revenue water leakage. Additionally, all residential and commercial premises in these areas, known as District Metered Areas, are now equipped with water meters to prevent pilferage.
PHED Secretary Bhaskar Atmaram Sawant emphasized the importance of controlling non-revenue wastage through leakages and encouraging residents not to stockpile daily water supplies. “We aim to implement the system by controlling non-revenue wastage through leakages and by encouraging residents not to stockpile daily supply of water and then dispose of it once supply for the next day resumes,” Sawant explained.
This initiative marks a significant step towards ensuring a reliable water supply for Jaipur’s residents, addressing the city’s water needs during the intense summer months.
