Avni Lekhra won gold medal in Para-Sports World Cup

Golden Girl Avni Lekhra of Jaipur has once again brought laurels to India by winning the gold medal. On Friday, Avni won the gold medal in the World Shooting Para Sports World Cup held in Ojisec. Avni won in the R-2 10m Air Rifle Championship against Slovakia’s Veronika and Ukraine’s Irina, defeating them by securing 248.3 points. 

Avni also expressed happiness by tweeting on her grand victory, she tweeted, “Great start to the 2023 WSPS World Cup in Osijek. R2 won the Gold Medal in the 10m Air Rifle SH1 event. Now, looking forward to the next match. Hope I can keep this pace going.”

She won many awards and rewards

Due to her brilliant game, Avni Lekhra has so far received many awards including Padma Shri Major, Dhyanchand Khel Ratna, Young Indian of the Year, Para Athlete of the Year. Industrialist Anand Mahindra also gifted her a special XUV-700 customized for her. 

Avni has also won prizes worth crores of rupees till now. The Rajasthan government had also given her a cash award as well as appointment to the post of ACF in the forest department. Also, the Women and Child Development Department has made her the brand ambassador of Beti Bachao and Beti Padhao.

Avni won gold in the Tokyo Paralympics

Avani Lekhra was the first woman to win the gold medal in the 10 meter air rifle SH-1 event, performing brilliantly at the Paralympic Games 2020 played in Tokyo. She also got bronze in the 50 meter rifle. She is the first Para athlete of India to win 2 medals in Paralympics.

Avni Lekhra was a victim of a car accident at the age of 11 and her spinal cord was broken. Due to this accident, she also went into depression. Later, her father suggested that she should participate in sports. Avni then read ‘A Shot at History’, the biography of Beijing Olympic Games gold medalist Abhinav Bindra. After this, she became more serious about shooting. Avni started shooting training in 2015 from Jagatpura Sports Complex, Jaipur.
