  • Bangladesh became independent in 1971. In 1972, 30% reservation was given in government jobs to freedom fighters and their relatives.
  • There were changes in it from time to time. After protests, the government abolished it in 2018. However, on June 5, 2024, the High Court reinstated it.
  • In June 2024, students took to the streets in protest against this. On July 21, the Bangladesh Supreme Court overturned the High Court’s decision and implemented only 7% reservation.
  • Despite this the students continued the protest. The students were demanding the resignation of Sheikh Hasina.
  • Students set fire to several police stations and government buildings during the protest. After this the army was deployed.
  • More than 200 people were killed in the violence in July 2024, many of whom were shot by police. During this period, about 10 thousand people were detained.
  • After this, the protests became more violent and turned into the current political crisis, due to which PM Sheikh Hasina had to flee the country.
