The Rajasthan government recently issued the guidelines in which they ordered the closure of the schools in urban areas across Rajasthan to prevent the spread of Covid-19 among children.
According to the senior government officials, “As the infection is spread to rural areas, the district collectors are permitted to close schools in rural areas where Covid-19 cases are reported. It would be at the choice of the district collectors to decide in this regard.”
“There is one more reason behind the decision of not closing the schools in rural areas is the unstable connection of the internet. Apart from the Internet stability issues, many of the rural areas don’t even have internet connections. Due to this children are unable to attend online classes,” said the officer.
He further added that presently the Covid-19 is mainly spreading in urban areas including Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur. The decision of not closing the schools was taken as the rural areas are still quite safe. The opening of schools doesn’t imply when the cases arise in those areas. If the cases are reported in any area, it would be up to district collectors to decide if the schools should be closed depending on the number of cases.
Moreover, the parents can also decide not to send children to school if they are worried about the health of their children. However, online classes will continue in urban areas as well as rural areas.
Health minister Parsadi Lal Meena said, “the state government is completely ready to handle the third wave of Covid-19. We have 28,000 oxygen beds and 6,000 ICU beds. Although there is a rise in cases, the hospitalization ratio is relatively low, so we are presently not tackling the inadequacy of resources.”
The weekly positivity rate is 5.26% which is lower compared to the national rate of 7.39%. There are 529 Omicron cases in Rajasthan. Nearly 92.6% of the population (18+) has received the first dose, while 76% are fully vaccinated.
