Jaipur | July 20, 2025 — The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has accelerated work on the muchawaited Tonk Road expansion, aiming to complete the 60footwide stretch by October 2025. This key corridor, which connects the city center with Jaipur Airport and Sanganer, has long been plagued by congestion, particularly during peak hours.
🛣️ What’s Being Done
The current expansion project involves:
Widening the existing road from 40 feet to 60 feet
Relaying drainage lines along the stretch
Adding pedestrian pathways and LED street lighting
New traffic signals and Uturn planning at critical points
The work is focused between Gopalpura flyover and Pratap Nagar intersection, a 7km stretch that sees over 50,000 vehicles daily.
🏗️ Progress So Far
65% of the base road work is reportedly complete
Utility shifting (electric poles, pipelines) is ongoing
JDA has deployed additional labour and night shifts postmonsoon showers
The drainage slab work at Mahaveer Nagar was completed last week
JDA Executive Engineer Mr. R.S. Sharma stated:
“We are targeting road layering and surfacing work to finish by September so that traffic can be streamlined before Diwali rush.”
🚦 Impact on Commuters
Daily commuters continue to face:
Heavy traffic near Gopalpura bypass
Detours via B2 Bypass and Mahavir Nagar
Longer commute times especially during school hours
JDA has urged drivers to follow diversions and avoid parking near construction zones.
🧠What’s Next?
Installation of road signage and lane dividers (August)
Blacktopping and surface testing (September)
Street lights and final safety checks (October)
Once completed, the wider Tonk Road is expected to cut travel time by 30% and ease pressure on adjacent routes like Jawahar Circle and New Sanganer Road.
