Gangaur is the most salient and colorful festival in Rajasthan. Though it is celebrated in many other states as well, the real charm of this festival can only be witnessed in the Royal Rajasthan. Out of many reasons this festival is one crucial reason to attract tourists to visit Rajasthan and relish its culture. It is celebrated once in a year, after two weeks of Holi, during the month of March or April. Hosted in almost every city of this state, one can hardly ignore the way Jaipur celebrates Gangaur festival. Jaipur is popular all over the world for enjoying its fairs and festival with utmost spirit. Many tourists come to Jaipur during this time to savor the cultural spirit it withholds.

The Gangaur festival commemorates the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati as the word Gangaur represents Lord Shiva and Parvati together. This is because the word ‘Gan’ signifies Lord Shiva and ‘Gaur’ signifies Goddess Gauri (Parvati). This religious festival celebrated by the women folk in the honor of Goddess Gauri as she represents perfection and connubial love. Celebrated by both married and unmarried women, it is believed that praying the goddess will bless the unmarried women with good life partners and married ones with well-being, prosperity for their husbands and happy married life.

It is an 18-day long festival, women celebrate it by fasting the whole day, for 18 days. On the 17th day, parents of married women send gifts, attires, jewelry, and other items to their daughter. The next day their daughter get ready wearing that dress and jewelry and perform the rituals. The idol of Gauri is beautifully decorated and worshipped it along with singing traditional songs and applying Mehendi on hands and feet. On the last day, a grand procession is held, with local bands and horses, where a large statue of Goddess Gauri is taken through the city. The procession includes numerous people and the women who did fast. The women bring the water pots on their head to the lake. The earthen pots are then broken near the lake and idols are immersed into the water.
