This will be a major relief to blood cancer patients as Jaipur will soon have India’s largest bone marrow transplant center for cancer patients. It is under development at the State Cancer Institute.
It will be the country’s largest bone marrow transplant center that will likely be operational by the end of 2023. After the commencement of this 50-bed center there will be a major relief to blood cancer patients as there is a lack of infrastructure for bone marrow transplants in the state.
At present, there is a 2-bed center at SMS Hospital in Jaipur; however, there is always a waiting list due to inadequate facilities and lack of workforce and aids. It takes almost a year of waiting if any patient looks forward to transplant. While many patients don’t get the opportunity to benefit from transplants and have to depend on medications. But things will change with the development of this center.
According to a State Cancer Institute official, “Bone marrow transplant is more effective for blood cancer patients than medication. So hopefully, more patients will be able to benefit after the launch of the center.”
It’s crucial to undergo the transplant at an early stage of cancer, but since currently there is a shortage of facilities in Jaipur, the patients have to either depend on private hospitals or wait long for their turn. The cost of a bone marrow transplant at private hospitals can go up to Rs 25 lakh which most patients can’t afford. The transplant can be conducted free of cost in Rajasthan under the Chief Minister Chiranjeevi scheme.
For a bone marrow transplant, the most important requirement is that the bone marrow of the patient should match the bone marrow of the donor. It is also essential to have a match of human leukocyte antigen. The chances of HLA resemblance is 25% in siblings and 1% to 3% in parents.
