Two friends drowned due to boat capsizing at Nevta Dam in Jaipur

Two youths taking selfies in a boat at Nevta Dam of Jaipur drowned due to boat capsizing, the boat sailor and others recovered their bodies.

Two youths went for a boat ride at Nevta dam lost their lives due to drowning while taking selfies. The incident happened due to capsizing of the boat. Bodies were retrieved after a rescue operation conducted for 36 hours.

As per the locals, the boat sailor and his companion, Gaurav were sailing in the Nevta dam on Saturday evening. Meanwhile, Suresh Gurjar, resident of Nevada village and his friend Saksham reached there. Both of them had gone to visit the Nevta dam and made a plan to roam in the boat.

When the boat reached the middle of the lake, Suresh and Saksham started taking selfies amid the water. Due to this, the balance of the boat got disturbed and the boat overturned. All four of them fell into the water. The two of them, the boat sailor and his companion swam out. But the two friends couldn’t because they didn’t know how to swim and drowned in the deep water of the dam.

After the two came out, they called for help and informed the police. The incident was reported to the SEZ police station. The SEZ police station reached the spot and immediately called the civil defense team.

Rescue operation of 36 hours

A team of police and civil defense reached the spot. A rescue operation was carried out but it took more than two days to recover both the bodies. First body was found after searching for 17 hours, it took 19 more hours to find the second. Both the bodies have been retrieved after a search operation which lasted for about 36 hours.

The Civil Defense and SDRF and NDRF teams carried out a search operation in Nevta Dam to retrieve both the bodies. The police sent the dead body from the dam to the hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem.

Villagers demanding compensation

A large number of villagers had gathered after coming to know about the drowning of two youths in the Nevta dam, demanding compensation. It was only after Suresh’s body was found in the Nevta dam that the villagers along with the family sat on a dharna demanding compensation.

According to the villagers, There are no adequate security arrangements even after many deaths in the Nevta dam. The villagers submitted a memorandum demanding financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to the relatives of the deceased Suresh, government job to a member of the family, action against the culprits and opening of a police post at Nevta dam.

Boating and fishing are banned, yet boating happens

According to the SEZ police station, boating and fishing in the Nevta dam is illegal. The police repeatedly monitor and instruct the people. Despite this, some people secretly go boating in the dam and also catch fish. Boating was also being done here on Saturday evening due to which the accident happened and the two youths died. As of now, the administration appeased the matter after convincing the villagers.

Nevta dam is about 25 km from Jaipur. The dam is built in about 6 bighas, which is about 25 feet deep and also has a wetland.
