The reason behind building the glass Palace is that in ancient days the queen was not allowed to sleep outside in the open air. But she expressed her fondness for seeing the stars while sleeping. Hence the king ordered his architects to design the mahal in a way that could solve the problem. The architects adorned glasses and stones inside Sheesh mahal Jaipur so that even a single flash of light in the night creates a reflection like stars in the whole room.

Also, the King used it as his abode in winters. In winters, he used to move from Sukh Niwas to Sheesh Mahal. This is because the reflections of the candles in the glass ceiling mirror keep the space warm.

Spellbinding Architecture

The structure is a great instance of Islamic architectural impact on Rajasthani architecture. The walls of this shimmering palace are festooned with intricately cut glass pieces that are arranged to make magnificent designs. The transformation of an otherwise ordinary palace into a mesmerizing piece of art will amaze you to the core. These mirrors of the Sheesh Mahal are from Belgium and are of convex pattern. They are adorned with tinted foil and brightening paint which gleam luminously even under the tiniest hint of light in dark. These accentuate the beauty of the palace, augmenting its panache.

The most beautiful feature of this palace is that if a single ray of light enters the Mahal, it replicates in all the mirrors and the entire hall naturally lits up and illuminates. There are numerous tiny mirrors, patterned mosaics, coloured glasses embedded on the walls and ceilings of this hall. These mirror tiles instill life into this Mahal with thousands of flickering reflections. The place is not just about the beautiful decor of the palace, it is the beautiful amalgamation with the fact that even a candle was enough to light the entire hall with the reflection giving a view like a thousand stars is mesmerizing.

Apart from this, the pillars also has a design that is second to none. Of them, one has a uniquely designed flower carved at its base, which shows different colours of flowers when seen from different angles.

True to its name, magnificent precious stones and coloured glasses, beautifully hand-crafted paintings make Sheesh Mahal an architectural marvel. The thousands of flickering reflections illuminating the surroundings make a perfect place to relive the beautiful history of the palace.
