The state’s first university ‘The University of Rajasthan’ will be celebrating its 75th foundation day today. It is the state’s first and the last to be established before Independence.

However, this special day has not been celebrated grandly or ceremonially amid ongoing corona fear, but the 31st convocation of the university has been organized on this day. In the ceremony, three students were awarded the degree, 472 PhD degrees, 117 students were awarded gold medals and about 1,53 thousand degrees.

The function was organized at Poddar Management Institute located in Gandhi Circle. On this occasion, Governor Kalraj Mishra and Higher Education Minister Rajendra Singh Yadav as well as University Vice-Chancellor Rajiv Jain were present in offline mode.

How it came into existence

Earlier, most of the colleges of the state were affiliated with Allahabad University. In 1921, Allahabad University passed a new act that intermediary classes and colleges have to be separate to get affiliation. The concept of having affiliation wasn’t common in any colleges of Rajasthan at that time. But this initiated the efforts for establishing a separate university in Rajasthan. However, even after the establishment of the university in Rajasthan, the idea wasn’t successful as to have separate classes meant more expenditure.

After two decades the prime minister of Jaipur with rulers of Alwar, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Bikaner established a university in Jaipur in 1946. Maharaja Sawai Man Singh (II) granted 300 acres to the university and Rajputana rulers gave a grant of Rs 2.5 lakh. Soon the University gave affiliation to 22 colleges across the state and also controlled high schools and intermediary education. After the constitution of the Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education, all schools were also shifted under it.

Over the years, various leading faculty members became part of the university. Great politicians including Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and many others visited the university on several occasions.
