Rajasthan local language to get a place in primary education soon

Education News

The Rajasthan education department will soon enlist local language through an ‘Education in Mother Tongue’ programme in pre-primary and primary classes from the next academic session under the New Education Policy (NEP).

The Rajasthan State Council of Educational Research & Training (RSCERT), Udaipur, has formulated a curriculum with subjects in three languages – Hindi, English and the local dialect. For instance, textbooks will teach the meaning of a single word in three languages: mango in English, aam in Hindi and Keri in the local tongue.

The Rajasthan government is dedicated to initiating the provisions of NEP by integrating it into its education system by June 2022. The promotion of local languages is one of the main provisions of NEP. The state has 18 local languages recognised by the central government and several other minor languages.

According to Kamlendra Singh Ranawat, associate professor at RSCERT “Earlier this year, 18 languages had been zeroed in for the formulating the module for classes up to five. Subject experts from across the regions were called to form a repository of words in order to create a combined textbook. Our effort is to include all languages, which is a difficult job assuming the depth and diversity of it.”

Every language book will start with an image with its name in the local language, Hindi and English. The languages which have been included are Marwari, Vaagdi, Doondari, Mewari, Bhili and Shekhawati along with other minor languages.

Priyanka Jodhawat, head of RSCERT said that intense training has been given to the teachers to train or teach students in the classrooms with the new module. The focus is to educate students in their local language in order to keep these languages alive.

The research body has also kept a provision of allowing the teachers to fill or modify the words for common articles or places if they sound different in a particular area. The language class will continue up to class 5.
