Pan-India service of single Emergency Helpline Number 112, Launched

112 is a multipurpose helpline number facilitates immediate assistance to helpline services linked to police, fire, health, women safety, and child protection.

An all in one emergency helpline number “112” has been recently brought into action in India. Initially, it can be accessed in 16 states and Union Territories. However, soon the services will be made available all across the country. Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the central government is devoted to helping out citizens in distress, particularly to ensure the safety of women. They can emit panic signals and their whereabouts to the nearest police station by activating the panic call feature, pressing a single key on their phones.

To activate the unique panic call feature, users can dial 112 from their mobile phones. The smartphone users can press the power button three times quickly, which activates a panic call to the Emergency Response Centre (ERC). While people who do not have smartphones can long press ”5 or ”9” to activate the panic call.

Users can also use ”112 India” mobile app, which is available free on Google Play Store and Apple Store. For women and children, the “112 India” mobile app has a special feature named ”SHOUT” that provides immediate assistance by alerting registered volunteers close to the victim.

Online Emergency complaints

Users can also access the emergency services online by logging on to the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) website. On the ERSS website. They can either send an emergency email or send an SOS alert to the Emergency Report Centre (ERC).

The 16 states and Union Territories where single emergency helpline number is launched are Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Gujarat, Daman and Diu, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, Andaman, Dadar, and Nagar Haveli.

Besides, the home minister instigated one more project, the Investigation Tracking System for Sexual Offences and the safe city implementation monitoring portal. Meant for law enforcement agencies in the country, it would greatly strengthen the ability of states and will promote timely investigation and execution in rape cases.

Eight metro cities have been identified for implementation of the projects. The cities are Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Lucknow. The projects are financed using the Nirbhaya Fund Scheme.

The launch of panic button (ERSS),  Investigation Tracking System for Sexual Offences and the safe city implementation monitoring portal will improve women’s safety situations and act as an effective deterrent against rape cases, instilling a sense of security in women.
