Heavy lightning strikes tower near Amer fort claiming 11 lives

Lightning struck the watchtower in Amer Fort on Sunday amid heavy rain in Jaipur. At least 11 people died in Jaipur on Sunday and more than 30 others were injured. Rescue conducted on the surrounding forest and hill to search the victims with the help of a drone.

The incident took place around 7.30 pm when people were taking selfies. It was raining heavily in Nahargarh hills and surrounding areas and a lightning bolt struck. Nearly 50 people were gathered on a hilltop ‘Watch Tower’ in Amer fort to enjoy the first showers of the monsoon. 

A number of them jumped off the watchtower in panic and thus sustained injuries. While many of them fell off the hilltop accidentally. After this, some locals informed the police control room. As soon as the news of the matter was received, the police and state disaster relief force (SDRF) teams rushed to the spot. They launch a rescue operation to search for all the victims who fell off the hill. 

Police Commissioner, additional police commissioner and several other officials arrived at the spot. Additional Police Commissioner Rahul Prakash confirmed the death of 11 people due to lightning in Amer Fort and its adjoining area. The help of drones was taken to find the people trapped on the hill.

The rescue operation lasted for hours, all the injured were brought down the hill and reached the hospital. Many of the injured are still in critical condition. The rescue team brought down more than 35 people. Injured 35 victims of the accident have been sent to SMS Hospital Trauma Center.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and the Governor of Rajasthan expressed grief over the loss of lives in the tragedy. Ashok Gehlot has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of those who died in the accident. He has also talked about providing financial compensation to the injured.
