Government extends night curfew in Jaipur banning New Year Celebrations

In a move to curb the slight surge in Covid 19 cases, the Rajasthan government has extended the night curfew till January 1. The curfew will be in action from 8 pm of December 31 to 6 am on January 1. Also, the government has imposed a ban on firecrackers.

Earlier, the night curfew was in effect, till the midnight of December 31 which has now been extended to 6 am. Many restaurants and hotels were hoping to host new year parties as they assumed the curfew will end on the midnight of December 31. All the markets, hotels and other establishments will need to close by 7 pm on December 31.

According to the Rajasthan Epidemic disease Act 2020, “There will be a complete ban on the sale and bursting of firecrackers, organising gatherings, events, functions and parties.”

The restrictions have been put keeping in view the COVID-19 situation in the state. The officials said that since the curfew will be in effect, the people will have to celebrate the New Year indoors and have to avoid outdoor gatherings. Now, on New Year’s Eve, there will be no late-night parties and no fireworks.

According to a senior home department officer, “The orders will be effective in urban places with a population of more than 1 lakh. Most smaller towns and cities will also have to follow these orders. The curfew will be executed strictly in all the cities along with Jaipur. Legal action will be taken against people who disobey these orders. 

Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot pleaded that people should celebrate New Year at home with their family members. They should avoid crowded places and parties as it could increase COVID-19 cases. 

As per the records, coronavirus cases have crossed the 3 lakh mark in the state till now. Currently, there are 11,648 active cases. However, the number of active COVID cases per day has gone below 1,000 in the state and the recovery rate stands at 95%.
