85-year-old Maharaja Prithviraj Singh, member of the erstwhile royal family of Jaipur and former MP from Dausa, died here on Wednesday due to COVID-19.

According to the information received, Prithviraj was admitted to the private hospital four days before the corona got infected. It is being told that he suffered a massive cardiac arrest at a private hospital here before his death.

Maharaja also known by the name ‘Pat Bapji’ was the son of the erstwhile Jaipur ruler, Sawai Man Singh II, and his second wife Kishore Kanwar. His wife Devika Devi is the princess of Tripura and stepmother’s niece Gayatri Devi. He left behind a son Vijit Singh and three grandchildren.

Maharaja Prithvi Raj played a crucial role in commencing Rajasthan as a tourism destination. He was director of a royal property Rambagh Palace, which was a former residence of Jaipur rulers and later was transformed into a luxury hotel.

He loved to live an ordinary life. He even did not use ‘Singh’ after his name. He used to drive their own hatchback cars instead of luxury cars. He was also not fond of playing Polo like the other princes. He returned to Jaipur in 1959 after studying from Harvard after gaining experience at a travel and tourism company.

The late member of the royal family made a mark as a strong entrepreneur and a dedicated professional while managing the hotel. He was selected an MP from Dausa from Swatantra Party in 1962. He remained active in politics in the 70s.
