The cases of mucormycosis or black fungus on the rise in Rajasthan. On Wednesday, the state government declared ‘Black Fungus’ disease as an epidemic. The Black Fungus effect has been primarily noticed in the patients recovering or have recovered from Covid.

As the country is under the pressure of the second wave of COVID pandemic, the Black Fungus disease has also raised concerns across the country. Currently, around 100 black fungus patients are being treated in the state.  To handle this, a separate ward designed for the black fungus is set up at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur.

According to a statement handed out by the state’s Principal Health Secretary, “Mucormycosis has been warned as an epidemic and a notifiable disease in the state under the Rajasthan Epidemic Act 2020.”

CM Ashok Gehlot showed his concern over the steep rise in patients of black fungus at a Covid-19 review meeting on Wednesday. Witnessing the rising cases in Covid patients, he instructed officials to include its treatment in the health insurance scheme.

As per the experts, people with diabetes and whose immune system is not functioning well are more at risk of getting black fungus infection. They need to be on the guard against this. Declaration of Back Fungus as epidemic will ensure integrated and coordinated treatment of both black fungus and the coronavirus.

Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation Limited (RMSCL) placed an order with Bharat Serums and Vaccines Limited to purchase 2,500 vials of liposomal amphotericin B on May 14. This drug is used as a drug against Black Fungus.

Mucormycosis or black fungus is an inconvenience caused by a fungal infection. People catch mucormycosis by getting to contact with the fungal spores in the environment. It can also develop on the skin after the fungus penetrates the skin through a cut, bruise, burn, or other types of skin injury.
