Nahargarh fort history

Nahargarh fort history

King Jai Singh II began construction of the Nahargarh Fort in the year 1734. It was primarily built as a strong defence for Jaipur city. The fort had met the blows of devastation with the time, but it was expanded in subsequent years and played a significant role in battles that would take place in the region. But, it has never come under attack from any forces during the course of its history till date. Though the fort was intended to provide safety to the Moguls, in later years it would serve as a hiding place for Europeans of the region and Britisher’s wives as Indians rose up against the colonial Raj.

The fort is believed to be named after a Prince whose spirit is said to haunt it. Initially, this fort was called ‘Sudarshangarh Fort’, but subsequently its name was changed to Nahargarh after the death of Rathore Prince Nahar Singh who died here.

Nahargarh fort haunted story

Legend has it that the fort was named after a prince, whose spirit haunted the area during its construction. It is said that when the construction of the fort started, the workers were bewildered to find all their previous day’s work destroyed every morning. The hill was haunted by the soul of a prince named Nahar and that he did not take nicely the intrusion of others in his abode. It was then, Raja Jai Singh promised to build a temple dedicated to the prince and also to name the fort after him to appease the ghost. He then, to placate the irate prince, built a small fort to provide his soul with a resting place. A shrine was also built and dedicated to the prince. After that, the construction went on smoothly. Last but not least, the fort was named after this prince.
