Lithium reserves in Rajasthan

Lithium reserves with higher capacity than J&K traced in Rajasthan

Massive lithium reserves, larger than J&K, discovered in Rajasthan, discovery of this reserve will reduce dependency on China.

Months after India found its first-ever lithium reserve in Jammu and Kashmir, another reserve of the crucial mineral has been discovered in Rajasthan’s Degana of Nagaur district. Mining and Geological Survey of India (GSI) authorities claimed that the lithium reserves found are higher than the ones recently found in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the Ministry of Mines, “For the first time, lithium reserves were found in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi in February this year. Approximately 5.9 million tonnes of lithium reserves were discovered in Salal-Haimana area of the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir.”

The quantity of lithium here can meet around 80% of India’s demand. The discovery of these reserves may help in reducing the dependency of India on China for Lithium, claimed the Geological Survey of India (GSI).

India, till now, is dependent on China for Lithium. However, with the discovery of this reserve in Rajasthan, it is believed that China’s monopoly will end and like the Gulf countries, the fortunes of Rajasthan will also rise.

Lithium reserves in Rajasthan have been found in the same Renwat hill of Degana and its surrounding area, from where Tungsten mineral was once supplied to the country.

During British rule, the British had discovered Tungsten mineral in the year 1914 on the hill of Renwat in Degana.

Before independence, the Tungsten produced here was used to make war material for the British Army during the First World War. After independence, it was also used in the field of making surgical instruments in the energy and health sector in the country.

The GSI survey team reached Degana to find high grade tungsten minerals on the instructions of the Central Government. Meanwhile, the GSI survey team found the availability of Lithium reserves in this area.

Lithium is the world’s lightest metal, which is used to make mobile-laptops, electric vehicles and other chargeable batteries. A lithium battery is the only alternative for electric vehicles since it has a high power-to-weight ratio, enabling it to provide a large charge while keeping the vehicle’s curb weight low. It is more energy efficient and performs better at a wide range of temperatures. This makes it a safer, more reliable method than other materials.

Since lithium is a key component needed by every chargeable electronic and battery-powered device, the government is searching for rare metal reserves both within and outside the country. There is a tremendous demand for Lithium around the world. Due to the global demand, it is also called White Gold. The global value of one ton of Lithium is around Rs 57.36 lakh.
