History of Jaipur Zoo

The Jaipur zoological park was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in the year 1868. It was then open to the public in 1877. The park nestles on the periphery of the Ram Niwas Garden is an expansion of the Ram Niwas Garden, run by the Rajasthan State Government. The intent behind creation of zoological garden was to conserve and protect the wildlife that comprises mammals, birds and reptiles. The Jaipur Zoological park was founded under the Wild Life Protection Act and thus the authority works towards wildlife conservation efforts. Their accomplishments include various breeding programs carried out for crocodiles, cheetal and gharials.

Apart from the deer, the zoological park has many other herbivores such as black bucks, chinkara, Indian porcupine and rabbits.

Omnivores: The omnivore population comprises monkeys, black bears, Himalayan bears, wild boars and baboons.

Birds: The aviaries of the zoological park comprises exotic birds like Chattering lorries, Peacocks, White peacocks, emus, vultures, pelicans, ducks, parakeets, geese, storks (both white and painted), cockatoo, pheasants, parrots, swans and several others. The park also observes the existence of numerous migratory birds during winters like pink flamingos.

Reptiles: Apart from the gharials (an endangered crocodile species), the Jaipur zoological park nestles many other reptiles. In a different section there are gharials, turtles, tortoises, Indian pythons and one Eunectes notaeus (Yellow Anaconda).

Timings of Jaipur Zoo

The timings of the zoological park differ in the summer and winter months.

In summer, it is open from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.
In winter, it is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The park is open from Wednesdays to Monday and stays closed on Tuesdays. You will require about 2 to 3 hours to completely explore the entire zoo.

Best Time To Visit Jaipur Zoological Park

The best time to visit the Jaipur zoological park is during the winter, between October to March. It is the time when you can explore to the fullest and the weather is relatively pleasant.
