The health of Parrikar worsened in the past two days after his medical condition fluctuated for over a year. Earlier, he was taken to the US for treatment.

Goa chief minister Manohar Gopalkrishna Prabhu Parrikar, a 63 old widower, died battling with pancreatic cancer from over a year. He died at his private residence on Sunday evening at 6:40 pm.

According to the sources, Parrikar was put on life support system late Saturday night. The technocrat-turned politician was amid his fourth term in office as Goa chief minister. Also, he was a former defense minister.

The Goa had announced national mourning on Monday and a week of mourning in Goa. For today, all examinations have been postponed and all schools and educational institutions in the state will be closed. It has been declared that the National Flag will fly at half-mast across the country. Parrikar will be conceded state funeral with full military honors.

From 9.30 am to 10.30 am Mr. Parrikar’s body will be kept at the Panjim BJP head office. Then he will be taken to Kala Academy in Panaji to pay the final respects from the public until 4:00 pm. After this, the funeral procession will be held to the Miramar area in the capital. Lastly, around 5:00 pm, the last rites will be performed in Campal at SAG ground, approximately 4 km from Panaji, said the Goa CMO.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nitin Gadkari, Amit Shah, and Rajnath Singh and several other leaders will be in Goa on Monday to attend the last rites of Manohar Parrikar.

Modi paid his condolence to Parrikar, calling him  “true patriot, unparalleled leader”.

“Shri Manohar Parrikar was an unparalleled leader. A true patriot and exceptional administrator, he was admired by all. His impeccable service to the nation will be remembered by generations. Deeply saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti,” Modi tweeted.

Parrikar, senior BJP leader was born on December 13, 1955, into a middle-class family. After graduating from IIT-Bombay as a metallurgical engineer, he began his political career as an RSS pracharak working for the Sangh. In 1949, Parrikar won a BJP ticket from Panaji constituency and entered electoral politics.
