Why is Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated?

Legend says that Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from the sandalwood paste which she would use while bathing. She made an idol out of this paste and infused life into the mould with her “shakti” (power), as she herself is an embodiment of power. Parvati had made Ganesha guard the door and instructed him not to allow anyone inside while she was bathing. Lord Shiva was unaware of it and when he returned Ganesha did not let him through. In his fit of rage Shiva beheaded Ganesha. When Parvati came to know about this, she got infuriated, she asked Shiva to revive her son. To appease her Shiva instilled life back into Ganesha’s body and replaced her son’s head with that of an elephant. This was the rebirth of Lord Ganesha and since then Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated all over India as the birthday of Ganesha, the supreme deity of all.

When is Ganesha Chaturthi celebrated?

The Ganesh Festival is much looked forward to at the end of the monsoons. The birth of Lord Ganesha falls on the 4th day of the bright half of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada which usually comes around August or September. This year Ganesh Chaturthi 2022 will be observed on August 31 and will conclude on September 9 with Ganpati Visarjan.

How is Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated?

Traditionally, on this occasion, beautiful handcrafted idols of Lord Ganesh are installed both in homes and in public to pray and worship. He is then worshipped daily for ten days with an “aarti”, a ritual of worship, in the evening. The devotees offer his favorite sweet ‘modak’ coconut and jaggery in the form of ‘Prasad’.

This festival is observed for ten days starting from the fourth to the fourteenth day culminating in the immersion of the Ganesh idol in the rivers and lakes of the city. During the immersion, known as the Visarjan the statues of Ganpati as Ganesh are carried as a huge street procession featuring drum beats, devotional singing, and dancing. While submerging the idol, prayers and loud chants of “Ganpati Bappa Moriya ” are uttered earnestly requesting the Ganesha to return as early as possible next year.

People believe firmly in their hearts that the idol carries along with it all the problems that the people bear while being submerged. Most importantly, immersions only take place on certain days – one and a half, three, five, and seven days after Ganesh Chaturthi.
