Corona News Update News

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Friday announced a precautionary dose also known as a booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine to those over 18 at private vaccination centres from 10 April.

The Serum Institute of India (SII) revealed that the Covishield and Covaxin booster dose will amount to Rs 386 for end-users. Apart from Rs 225 for the vaccine, Rs 11.25 (GST at the rate of 5 per cent) and Rs 150 will have to be paid for the service charge of the vaccine. That is, in total for one dose, a person will have to pay Rs 386.

According to the Ministry of Health, “It has been decided that booster shots of Covid vaccines will be made available to 18+ population group. at private vaccination centres. The administration of Precaution Dose to the 18+ population would start from 10th April (Sunday), 2022. All those who are above 18 years of age and have completed 9 months after they got the second dose, would be qualified for Precaution Dose or booster shot. The booster dose facility will be accessible in all Private Vaccination Centres.”

The Health Ministry further added that “The ongoing free vaccination drive through government vaccination centres for the first, second and the booster dose to healthcare workers, frontline workers and the population above the age of 60 will continue and would speed up.”

What is the Covid vaccine precaution dose?

Precaution dose is the third dose of the same vaccine that one has been administered against the Covid-19 infection. Those who got Covaxin will get a third dose also of Covaxin and those who got Covishield will go for the Covishield booster dose.

The decision to begin the third dose of Covid has been taken though India’s pandemic situation is under control. The requirement for a third dose was felt globally with the recent emergence of newer variants of the virus in China, while the immunity generated by two doses of the vaccine subsides gradually.

The Covid vaccination drive started in January 2021 and got extended to many phases involving children as well. Now all adults are qualified for the third dose of the vaccine. It is a remarkable milestone for India’s vaccination drive.
