Automated driving track at RTO is a hard obstacle for license applicants

All new vehicles to be pre-fitted with ‘High-security number plates’

News

The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has issued a circular to automobile dealers making it mandatory for new vehicles, including cars and bikes sold on or after April 1, to be pre-fitted with ‘High-security Registration plates’.

The ministry of road transport and highways instructed to issue the circular to all the Regional transport offices. The new rule has been implemented from April 1, 2019,  which has made it mandatory for all vehicles to be pre-fitted with High-Security Registration Plates.

According to the officials, the high-security number plates will enable easier tracking of lost and stolen vehicles. The vehicle owners will no longer be able to change the design of the number plates, ensuring uniformity of registration numbers.

The pre-fitted security number plates contain a chromium-based hologram which will be hot-stamped on the top-left corner of both front and rear HSRPs. This stamp will contain the Ashoka Chakra in blue. A 10-digit unique PIN will be laser-branded into the bottom-left corner of the plates which will be fastened with two snap locks. A hot-stamping film will be applied on the letters and numerals of the registration number and it will have ‘India’ inscribed on it. The plates will have a standardized font and size.

The cost of the plates will be included in the price of the vehicle. It will also come with a 15-year warranty, which will include replacement in case of breakage within the specified period.

Existing vehicles can also apply for the HSRP,  once they surrender and destroy the old plates.
